by Martin VisserLabel: Spectrum
Year: 1960
Designer Martin Visser became known through his sleeping sofa. Which was produced for the first time in 1960 and is still on avaiable by Spectrum. The sofa can be transformed to a single bed in the turn of a hand. The design breathes optimism and progress. The soberness of the sofa puts an end to the thick wooden, richly decorated sofas from before the war.
When the NRC Handelsblad asked the readers, in 2006, what the best Dutch design was of the passed century, Martin Vissers BR02 came up as runner-up. 'Primal Dutch' because of its simplicity and virtue. Some people were sitting on it for over 50 years. The new designs of Visser are much more baroque then his earlier works with which he made a name for himself. His wife, Joke van der Heijden, influenced his in this. She made the colours and decorative elements, who accentuated the shapes and constructions.
