Chanel No. 5
by Gabrielle 'Coco' ChanelLabel: Chanel
Year: 1921
‘A woman should smell like a woman and not like a rose’, said Chanel when she asked Ernest Beaux to create a perfume. He subsequently made a series of perfumes and numbered these from one to five and from twenty to twenty-five. Chanel did not hesitate for a second and chose number five. She launched the perfume on the fifth of May (05/05/1921), because she was convinced of its success.
She was right. The perfume turned out to be a success and is one of the bestselling perfumes in the world. According to estimates, a bottle of Chanel no. 5 is sold worldwide every 30 seconds. Partly because of the design of the bottle, Chanel ensures that the attention remains on the perfume. The perfume and its bottle are seen and described as a timeless, authentic and modern at the same time. And that for a ‘design’ that is almost 90 years old.
